John Gibbons has always been interested in fostering a greater love and knowledge about music amongst all people, irrespective of their age. He has lectured at West Dean College, for the WEA and given many talks for local organisations. He particularly gives audiences short pep talks about music in the programmes with the aim that their listening experience will be greatly enhanced.
John has a vast range of experience working with young people including two enormously successful “Big Sing” projects at Symphony Hall, Birmingham based on the choral works of Karl Jenkins. He hopes to run a similar project in Worthing in the summer of 2014.
In his first season in Worthing John set up “Platform for Youth” so give an opportunity for young people to play before the large audience at Symphony Concerts. This then developed in the Worthing Youth Prom where John and musicians from Worthing Symphony Orchestra were able to work alongside young musicians from across West Sussex.
In January 2017 WSO gave a free Schools Concert to over 800 Worthing school children playing music by Glinka, Alwyn, Paul Lewis, Grieg, Haydn, John Williams amongst others. Futher schools concerts are planned for the 2017-18 season
